FAN WITHOUT BLADES

Posted by rajascientist Thursday, October 15, 2009 0 comments

When it comes to the design of fans there hasn’t been much innovation or change for a long time. An electric motor turns some blades which then produces a flow of air. The design is simple, yet effective, and we use such fans in everything from keeping our PC components cool to keeping ourselves cool on a hot summer day.

Dyson, most well known for revolutionizing the vacuum cleaner market with its bagless design, has now started another revolution with fans. Its researchers have managed to create a fan that has no blades yet still manages to produce a strong stream of air flow.

The Airblade hand-dryer, launched three years ago, was initially compared to a noisy trouser press. Now it is common in office, school and NHS toilets, drying hands in as little as 10 seconds and reducing infection by cutting cross-contamination from bacteria.

Stung by criticism of relying on overseas manufacturing facilities in Malaysia and China, Dyson said the new products would be assembled in the UK and exported from the UK. "We are a British company but we weren't allowed to expand in the UK," he said.

My Own Idea To Try

Free Road Side Lighting :

Have  you ever noticed  a lot of wind energy is produced and wasted , as a vehicle pass by you along the high way. These  wind energy produced throughout the day can be used effectively to generate power. These power can be used for lighting road side lights.

Placing small wind turbine along  the road will generate power, enough  wind will be produced by vehicle passing by. These turbines can be placed along the road side or at the platform separating two lanes. Thousand of vehicle pass by every day and plenty of artificial wind is produced.

 Wind Turbine For Vehicle:

Another idea is placing a small turbine above or at the front of the vehicle . As the vehicle moves these turbines can be used to generate  power ,enough to charge a battery .Once fully charged this can be used to run the car. Alternate  battery can be charged at the same time.Hence a complete electric car  ,without any wastage of time in charging the battery can be obtained.

For additional power the body of car  can be coated with solar cell.

SIMPLE ELECTRIC BELL

Posted by rajascientist Tuesday, September 1, 2009 3 comments

You might have all came across many electric bells using electromagnet ,this is yet another one with slight modification , a home made electric bell.

Materials Required:

  1. Gong ( toy car )
  2. Hammer (battery cover sheet)
  3. Electromagnet ( Picture tube coil)
  4. 9 V battery
  5. Simple Switch Mechanism.(hanging wire)
  6. Pole Supporting Hammer ( pen refill)

Electromagnet:

When electric current passes through a coil wound on a soft iron core ,iron acts as a temporary magnet. It acts as a magnet until current passes through it. I got this electromagnet from junk TV picture tube, works perfectly.

More the number of turns ,more the applied voltage the strength of electromagnet will increase.

Gong :

Look for it in some toy cars ,or else take some tensile metal .

Hammer:

Do it yourself. I made one out of a battery cover metal sheet.

Simple Switch Mechanism:

It is the switch mechanism which varies from bell to bell. It depends upon creativity of creator. Many types mechanism are available. I have used hanging type switch. Nothing but a simple strip of wire hanging down touching the hammer.

Whenever the hammer is pulled and released , the circuit opens and closes.

Pole:

A small pole is erected near the electromagnet , bearing spring and holding hammer. I used a pen refill as a pole and a spring around the refill. Which gives the necessary tension to the hammer.

This is how it works . The speed of the hammer can be increased by increasing the power of electromagnet .

Electricity From Water

Simple Battery

Following the below procedure you can make a simple battery ,by just using water as a electrolyte.

Things needed:

  1. Water
  2. Zinc plate
  3. Carbon rod
  4. Waste battery

This simple battery needs two electrodes Zinc and Carbon .These electrodes can be easily obtained from junk batteries.

How to remove carbon rod:

First of all remove the external metal covering of the battery carefully. Now the layer covering the battery is nothing but Zinc .

After removing the plastic cover ,carefully remove the carbon rod by pulling at the top. You can get a black rod that is nothing but the carbon rod.

Leave all those black powder which is of no use for us .Now the zinc plate and carbon rod are going to act as a electrode.

Battery:

Take a glass full of water immerse these two electrodes, now check the voltage using multimeter.By connecting two or more such cells you can produce voltage enough to light a LED.

For more voltage add some acid to water ,so that the conductivity of water increases. You can add lemon ,citrus juice to water which are acidic in nature .

HUMAN AS A BATTERY

Electrical impulses in the heart originate in the sinoatrial node and travel through the intrinsic conducting system to the heart muscle. The impulses stimulate the myocardial muscle fibres to contract and thus induce systole. The electrical waves can be measured at selectively placed electrodes (electrical contacts) on the skin.

These small electrical signals can be measured using a multimeter. Adjusting the multimeter to 200 or 2000mv dc the electrical signal produced can be measured. The strength of this signal vary from point to point ,that can be understood by touching multimeter electrode at different places on our skin.

When i measured my own body signals i got around 125 mv sometimes, suddenly i an idea flashed me i thought of amplifying this voltage to produce around 1 volt so that i can light some small bulb.

So now how to amplify , thought for a while then one thing struk my mind thats the voltage multiplier .

A voltage multiplier is an electrical circuit that converts AC electrical power from a lower voltage to a higher DC voltage by means of capacitors and diodes combined into a network. Voltage multipliers can be used to generate bias voltages of a few volts or tens of volts or millions of volts for purposes such as high-energy physics experiments and lightning safety testing.

The above circuit is an example of typical voltage quadrupler a type of voltage multiplier,

I used around 10 capacitors and diodes that is output volt is 10 times the input voltage. The circuit is in process I will tell u later whether I succeeded in lighting a small bulb.
